The King Still Reigns
? Matthew 2:19–20 (CSB)
“After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, because those who intended to kill the child are dead.’”
? Devotional Thought:
Herod raged. Babies died. Joseph fled.
But now the threat was gone. Herod was dead—and the true King was still alive.
That’s the message of Christmas: The powers of this world cannot stop the purposes of God.
Herod’s sword couldn’t silence God’s Son. And the same is true today.
No matter how loud evil roars, God still reigns. No matter how strong the opposition, Jesus still rules. The rage of kings will always fall—but the reign of Christ never ends.
? Talk About It:
What does this verse teach us about God's protection?
How does it feel to know that evil is temporary, but Jesus reigns forever?
What situations in our lives need the reminder that "God is still in control"?
? Tradition Tie-In: Crown the Tree
Create or place a crown ornament at the top of your Christmas tree tonight. Let it be a reminder: Jesus is King—not just over Christmas, but over everything.
Say this aloud together: “The King still reigns.”
? Closing Prayer:
Jesus, Thank You that You reign over all. Thank You that no matter how dark things get, Your light still shines. Help us trust in Your power, rest in Your protection, and live for Your glory. You are our forever King. Amen.
